My Top 3 Sewing Scissors

These scissors pictured are the scissors in my sewing drawer. They all have a purpose and I think they are useful, but three of them are “a cut above the rest”.

Gingher Knife Edge Shears (8 inches)

Please don’t cut fabric with the household pair that cuts anything and everything. Your hand will be working way harder than it needs to and the cut will not be as clean as it could be. Get a pair of dedicated fabric scissors. Only cut fabric with them; no paper, wire, cardboard, plastic, etc. This will truly make your sewing experience better. These Gingher scissors are sharp, pretty, and a nice size. I don’t prefer using big scissors unless I am cutting long straight lines. This 8-inch pair feels just right, like Mama Bear’s scissors. They have 92 percent 5-star reviews.

Pink Kai Scissors (5 1/2 inches)

These are my handy-dandy multi-purpose scissors. They sit close by for snipping threads, trimming seam allowance, snipping curves, and more. I joke that I could give a fly a haircut with these. They cut all the way to the very tip. They are very sharp, smooth, and pink! All around 10/10! I really appreciate the included cover.

Purple Kai Serrated Scissors (8 1/4 inches)

My newest pair and a fast favorite. These have also increased my esteem for Kai scissors. I specifically bought these for cutting silk and other shifty fabrics. Silk will slide forward as a regular pair of scissors cuts it. It is just the nature of the fabric. *enter serrated scissors* The micro-serration grips the silk as it cuts and makes for an easier cutting experience and cleaner cut edge. It may seem like a subtle difference at first cut, but it isn’t when you are cutting out a large project. I recommend these if you plan to use fabrics that are silky, shifty, or very thin.

Honorable Mention: The Paper Scissors

The paper scissors are the non-fabric workhorse. They cut everything but fabric. Paper patterns, tape, Velcro, cardboard, etc. They are not precious. Anything sharp and comfortable will do and you probably have a pair already. You might want to get a pair that stays in your sewing space, so they don’t get lost all the time. My Westcott pair are old and still fine for their job. I do like the bent handle for cutting out paper patterns on a flat surface.

The Little Guys

The tiny little DMC embroidery scissors are not a must-have for sewing. The Pink Kai scissors cover everything these can do, BUT I do like using tiny scissors sometimes. One little pair live in my knitting project bag for cutting yarn.

The classic orange Petite Fiskars are actually my daughters. She is a young sewer and her hands are much smaller than mine, so I bought her a smaller pair that would be more comfortable. They are great for getting a beginner sewer started. These are the 7-inch pair. The left-handled version is red.
